The crew system is what separates Outposts Unknown from a generic base builder. Officers are named people with species, specialities, skills and traits, and they get tired, hungry and unhappy.
| Division | Role |
|---|---|
| Command | Overall oversight and the officer roster |
| Science | Research, sample collection and the research tree |
| Engineering (Operations) | Construction, mining, maintenance and logistics |
| Medical | Treating injured crew and maintaining health |
| Navigation | Away missions, transport and survey work |
| Security | Hostile flora, threats and dispatch responses |
The crew roster includes humans, Vulcans, Andorians and members of the X'Lehari cultures including Gorn and Nausicaan. Named officers include Admiral Robert April, who briefs you as the Federation mission authority and appears using Adrian Holmes' likeness from Strange New Worlds, and Sarenek, an Ensign of Vulcan heritage in the Command division. Team Alpha and Team Beta field officers are also individually named, including Kassa Abdi, Sophia Choi, Rei Nakamura, Bren Rubio, Max Costa, Lucas Hayes, Elias Monroe, Alex Moreno and Liwen Takahashi, among a much longer roster.
Health, stamina, hunger, entertainment, morale and fatigue. These move on their own whether you are watching or not. Facilities are the levers: crew quarters, mess halls, medical, entertainment and lounges all feed morale. A good base is a facilities base.
Shifts were added after the demo and they matter. The night crew rests aboard the ship; anyone working outside at night sleeps under a forcefield, which is a real penalty. Some points of interest are night-only, so the schedule has to fit the exploration plan, not just the production plan.
Direct orders interrupt the work queue when something goes wrong: send engineers to maintenance, medics to an injured crew member, security to a threat. Beam Out recalls a single crew member for roster rotation or tactical staffing - useful when you need one specific specialism on the front line and the person who has it is three buildings away.
Do not assign an engineer with an indoor penalty to a deep mine, and do not leave a research-bonus scientist out in the field. Offices work in hours, so placement matters as much as the roster.
Officers earn XP from their work and you spend it on hazard reduction and logistics speed boosts. Guides generally rate these as the highest value per point of any officer upgrade, because they make every other system run more smoothly.
